A B.C. MP’s private member’s bill aimed at protecting bus drivers lifts a curtain on the human zoo that’s public transit.
Peter Julian tabled his bill in February in response to what the Burnaby-New Westminster New Democrat describes as “a disturbing trend over the last few years where a growing number of transit operators and bus drivers are being assaulted in the line of duty.”
The bill would impose tougher Criminal Code penalties on those who abuse transit workers, similar to provisions for police, fire and ambulance personnel.
Julian cited stats from Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver showing passengers in growing numbers are physically and verbally assaulting and spitting at transit workers.
